Ultrasound scanning (also called sonar) is a fast, non-invasive way to visualise the structures superficial to the chest wall. These include the lungs, pleura, mediastinum and trachea. This technology is especially useful for assessing fluid in the pleural space or on the lungs. Ultrasound guidance can be used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including pleural procedures (see above).
